As a Minnesota native I enjoy novels that are set in the locals I haunt. It’s fun! And since I also love mysteries, Where’s Billie? had two advantages going into the reading journey I took with the book. Judith Yates Borger is a former reporter with the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Marguerite “Skeeter” Hughes is a reporter for the Minneapolis Citizen (her husband is a reporter for the St. Paul Courier). She is also the mother of two young girls and she experiences the same insecurities about being a working mother as most women do.
Skeeter takes a missing person’s call made by a distraught mother from Land o’ Lakes and discovers that the eighteen-year-old girl reported missing is not a typical runaway. There are greater things going on in the case. The investigation leads Skeeter to places she didn’t expect, involvement with people she didn’t want to meet and a close encounter with a car trunk. The danger goes from “yellow” to “red” in a flash and the reader turns the pages as fast as possible. As Billie’s story edges closer and closer to her own life, Skeeter knows finding the answers is a life-or-death situation.
Where’s Billie? is a fast-paced mystery with interesting characters. It’s a bet this is the first in a series and I will try to patiently wait for the next book in the series.
Armchair Interviews says: A well-crafted mystery that will keep the reader turning the pages long after the light should be turned out.
