Reeling from the attack on her person and the subsequent abandonment by her fiance, family and community, Hannah Lapp has fled to Ohio in hope that she can begin a new life with her shunned aunt. Meanwhile, back in Owl’s Perch, Hannah’s community is trying to piece themselves back together, as individuals come to grips with the truth of what really occurred. As Hannah finds purpose in the English world, many of the people of Owl’s Perch must deal with their own secrets.
It was with much anticipation that I waited for this sequel to When the Heart Cries. What was to become of Hannah? What of her family and her fiance? I tore into this book with great relish. Cindy Woodsmall didn’t disappoint. She writes characters that take on flesh and find their way into her reader’s hearts.
I am going to take a big risk and assume that readers of Amish novels are also familiar with Science Fiction movies. I would equate this book with The Empire Strikes Back of the Star Wars trilogy. If it was the only movie in the series you watched, you would wonder why Luke was in his predicament and how Han Solo would get out of his. As it has been a year since I’ve read When the Heart Cries, I couldn’t quite zero in on the full story even though Cindy provided a detailed sketch of characters at the beginning. I am thankful that she didn’t rehash backstory within the novel, but I did have trouble anyway and wished I had gone ahead to re-read the first book. And, though there is a great story within the cover of When the Morning Comes, it is left absolutely unresolved—like Han Solo in the carbon (Star Wars).
Although this is a fantastic book, you’ll want to read the first one first. Meanwhile, I eagerly anticipate the third!
Armchair Interviews says: Heed reviewer’s advice to read these books in sequence.
