Thursday Next: First Among Sequels is Jasper Fforde’s fifth book in the Thursday Next series. Thursday, a literary detective, has the ability to read herself smack dab into books. I mean she is there, in the book. But it’s not always easy in the Bookworld.

Things are particularly tough for Thursday right now. Her teenage son, Friday, is headed for a career but he’d rather sleep all day. Thursday is a member of a council who must deal with problems by the Racy Novel genre, the reading rate is dipping and then she finds herself in a hotly contested race, and there are a myriad of other concerns that keep Thursday more than busy.

Thursday resides in Swindon (when she’s not traveling in the Bookworld) and at the moment stupidity abounds. Actually Swindon reminds me of our world where celebrity, computer games, television reality shows and other fluff is the order of the day and quite important. There are more issues in Swindon and Thursday is racing to solve those pesky problems that continue to plague her. And one of those little problems involves Thursday’s husband who thinks she’s left her Literary Detective job. Oh, dear, life, as I said, is not easy for Thursday. But it is fun for us to read.

Jasper Fford is delightful! His books are quirky, funny and whisper truths in the guise of fiction. You don’t have to be a book lover to enjoy his romps into fantasy.

Armchair Interviews says: Start at book one in the series and read your way through all five. You’ll be glad you did.
