Ulgen Salvatore has been abroad studying with his teacher, Laroh. Upon his return home, he finds his father has died months before and everyone believes that he too is dead. He sets out to reclaim his title and his land which will be awarded to the winner of a jousting tournament.

This is a promising story, rich with possibilities that remain unrealized. The author does little to breathe life into the characters. Perhaps if I could have known the characters better, I might have found them more appealing and cared what happened to them.

I have been known to overlook a weak plot if the characters are people I care about and empathize with. In this case, a decent plot without the emotional attachment just didn't work for me.
