Genie Michaels was thirty-six and had been dating the same man, Hugh Spencer, for the past four years. Hugh, being a famous author and a professor at the college Genie works for, was appearing on 20/20 with Barbara Walters discussing his new book when she asks him “Are you ever going to marry your own Dora?” Hugh then and there proposes to his girlfriend—but it’s not Genie!
Genie is crushed—when her best friend, Patty, decides to “help her out” by letting everyone believe that Hugh did, in fact, propose to Genie.
The good news travels fast and within moments, Genie’s parents are reserving a reception hall and caterers. Genie refuses to register for bridal shower gifts, but thanks to her sister, Lucy, she’s receiving expensive gifts at home and at work! Of course, Genie’s not helping much herself, considering she let Patty talk her into buying herself an “engagement ring.”
Then Genie meets Nick—a hot carpenter she can’t seem to keep her hands off. Nick just happens to be working with her brother, Todd, on a beautiful house that Genie has fallen in love with and wants to buy.
The Sleeping Beauty Proposal comes together in the end with a surprising twist and a fairy tale ending. It had me laughing out loud at Patty’s crazy antics and crying at Genie’s heartache and personal growth because of it.
I enjoyed The Sleeping Beauty Proposal immensely. It’s a fun, light read in which I felt that I could relate to Genie on a few different levels.
