Gwen (from the United States) and Findabhair (from Ireland) truly believe that faeries exist, and in the past they’ve hunted for ways to enter other worlds. The two young cousins have decided that their summer vacation in Ireland will be spent backpacking. Just an ordinary time sightseeing, or so they think.

At Tara, a desolate place, they spend the night in a faerie mound where Findabhair (Finn) is kidnapped by the Faerie King. Gwen is left behind and must work to get her cousin back. But time is the enemy as the Hunter Moon is near and if Gwen does not rescue Finn in time, she will be sacrificed to the Great Wyrm. Her job won’t be easy because Finn is reluctant to leave the beautiful place they’ve found. As Gwen gathers her helpers, she’s determined to save Finn, even if it means Faerie is destroyed.

O. R. Melling was born in Ireland, but grew up in Canada. She currently resides in Ireland with her daughter. The Hunter’s Moon was previously published in Ireland in 1992.

Melling’s novel is a rich blend of geography and the fascinating mythology of Ireland. Together those things provide a backdrop for well-developed characters and a wonderful plot. When the last page has been turned, you will long for more of the exciting, romantic adventure.

Fortunately, The Hunter’s Moon is followed by The Summer King and The Light Bearer’s Daughter.

Armchair Interviews says: A must read for Middle Readers and Young Adults.
