Buggy Crenshaw is an eleven-year-old girl with an extraordinary creative imagination. When her family moves to Lloyd’s Hollow she discovers there is power in her imagination because things she imagines can actually happen. And Buggy and her friends are needed to serve as Warriors for the Greater Good to stop an ancient evil presence that plans to destroy the world. Their greatest weapon is their imagination but it can also be their greatest weakness, for to win the battle, they have to imagine only good things–and if they lose their focus and think of bad things, those things can happen too. Will Buggy and her friends be able to stop the evil in time to save the world?
I found Buggy Crenshaw and the Bungler’s Paradox to be a delightful, creative, enchanting story for all ages but it is especially for those that are young at heart or at least in their minds! The tale is all about the power of imagination so yours needs to still be very active to follow the exploits of this imaginative little girl. Be prepared to suspend belief as this is not a book for practical people.
Buggy and her family have just moved to their new town when strange things begin to happen. Buggy’s dad, always a dreamer himself, keeps exploding their garage trying to find the next novel invention, so he is too preoccupied to pay attention to Buggy. Her mother is the practical one and seems immune to the magic and only seems interested in her plants and animals. Maybe she is what the town calls a refuser or one who refuses to believe in magic? Buggy’s brother is all about books and knowledge but doesn’t deal well with imagination either.
And then there is Buggy who seems to have enough imagination to make up for the flaws in her family. Luckily, for Buggy, she makes friends with Sid and Veronica who know about the town’s history and the strange signs that are appearing all around them. With their guidance and help Buggy embarks on a fantastic adventure and can hopefully save the world!
Armchair Interviews says: What a fun book for middle readers and young adults.
