When I sit down to review a book, I look at a lot of things, tangible and intangible. I can read a book and can tell the author did “all the right things” technically, but the book still leaves me unimpressed. I can read a real page turner that drives me crazy with grammatical issues and I’m not sure how to rate it. And then I got hold of Tracey Bateman’s That’s (Not Exactly) Amore. It just sizzles. I don’t know how else to describe it. There are people who are trying to learn the craft and you can appreciate their effort–and there are people who know the craft. Tracey Bateman knows the craft.
That’s (Not Exactly) Amore is your standard pink-covered book theme with a Christian bent. Girl hates her job and isn’t sure she even likes what she’s decided to do as a replacement job. She’s single and her biological clock is ticking. Girl meets guy and girl and guy have issues. Girl takes on crazy roommate that may or may not have a thing for the guy. What’s a girl to do? And yet, it works. Quite well. And is also refreshingly different.
I tore through this book in a single day. And I have four children that like to eat, so that says a lot. It can’t just be the shoes on the cover, either, though they are fab-u-lous. I suppose this is where the intangible comes in, because I can’t tell you exactly why I loved this book, I just did. BRAVO, Ms. Bateman, you nailed it this time!
Armchair Interviews says: A chick lit with a Christian bent.
