Reading Sandra Hill's novel, Tall, Dark and Cajun, is like the guilty pleasure one gets when eating a whole box of chocolates without sharing. It is by turns funny, happy, sad, very sexy and ultimately a romantic and delightful escape into fantasy-love land, Cajun style.
At the beginning of the story, Rachel Fortier, an attractive redhead who does Feng Shui decorating, has decided to leave her long-time boyfriend, David--the kind of guy who gives exercise equipment for every gift-giving occasion. She is going off to Louisiana to meet her grandmother for the first time. She had been brought up an orphan and just recently discovered that she actually had a living relative who would like to see her.
Down on the bayou, Remy LeDoux is getting ready to start work as a pilot for the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to help root out drug dealers who hide their stash in the swamplands. While as tall, dark and Cajun as the rest of the LeDoux clan (featured in other of Sandra Hill's books), Remy has issues with scars he received in an accident as an Air Force pilot.
These two, both having sworn off love--at least for a while, meet, of course, and immediately a sexy sizzle starts up between them. They are so attracted, distracted, in love and afraid of it that the story heats up by the page--to a hot, hot, Tabasco sauce affair of the heart.
This is a romantic novel and the sex scenes are both frequent and descriptive. However, the characters are both fun and charming--with Cajun quirks and Yankee sensibilities. The secondary players are well developed and quite loveable, making this book a treat to read. It is well worth its re-issuance.
(This book was published in 2003 by Hachette Book Group USA, re-issued with preview of new novel in 2007 by Warner Forever as part of a reissue in May of three of her Cajun books: TALL, DARK AND CAJUN, THE CAJUN COWBOY, and THE RED-HOT CAJUN at a discounted price of $4.99 each. This is the series that began with THE LOVE POTION and relates the stories of the famous LeDeux brothers.)
Armchair Interview says: It's not great literature, but it sure is fun.
