Twenty years after they went to school together, best friends Tracy, Olivia and Holly decide to get together and catch up on a luxury sailboat on the Caribbean. Olivia, the most wealthy and glamorous of them, has returned as a widow to her native United States after twenty years.
Expecting fun, reminiscing and lots of sun, the three friends set out with Tracey’s daughter Camy and two crewmembers, not realizing what lay ahead of them. Days into the journey, a simple mistake and unexpected weather, changes their sailing trip into a nightmare. Left to fend for themselves, the women try to ensure that everybody survives. But in such close quarters and with tensions mounting, secrets come out that have the power to damage strong relationships.
After realizing that I would be reviewing the novel as an audiobook, I was not sure if I would enjoy such a presentation since I had never “heard” a book before. But I was pleasantly surprised to realize that I had listened riveted to the whole story in one sitting. Ericksen does a good job of putting inflection and expression into the characters’ dialogue. Each character was expressed through different voices, so that the listener knows who the speaker is even before the name is read. The French and Italian accents are done exceptionally well. Music that expressed the mood of the story would have been an added bonus; however having none did not take away from the reading.
The story line is very well-crafted and moves at a quick pace. The only problem was that it had scenes and language that might concern some readers.
Armchair Interviews says: This is a great and exciting story to listen to as you while away a cold evening!
