Was there a mix-up in the hospital? It’s a question Jerramy Fine pondered constantly growing up. Born to free love, liberal hippie parents and being given a—let’s face it—masculine name, Jerramy believes she was destined for more grandiose things. How grandiose? Since birth, she believes she was meant to be a part of the British monarchy.
While most teenagers plastered posters of rock stars and actors to their walls, Jerramy carefully cut out tabloid photos of Peter Phillips, royal son of Queen Ann. From the time she could talk, she insisted her long-haired father and hippie mother were not her real parents.
So, not surprisingly, as soon as she could Fine left her world of vegans, hemp and radicalism. She skipped across the pond to jolly old England in search of her prince. But just because she landed on foreign soil didn’t mean Peter would fall in her lap.
There were subpar living arrangements, a roommate who went crazy, a pending work visa, drug-addled party boys and financial troubles.
But adopting Britain as her homeland did have some perks. She parties with Indian princes and the elite 20-somethings and even has a date with Winston Churchill’s great-grandson. Although she kisses a lot of frogs along the way, Jerramy still yearns for a shot at the monarchy: Buckingham palace is her Everest.
When she meets Queen Anne, Peter Phillips’ mother, at a social event, Jerramy begins to think she has a shot.
Jerramy Fines’ debut book “Someday My Prince Will Come” reads so effortlessly because her life already has all the elements of a good memoir. Despite her unconventional upbringing, Jerramy struggles to break out of the mold and blend in with England’s upper crust. And she does, fairly seamlessly.
Her memoir is touching, funny and well written as she travels around the world searching for crowns.
But how many frogs does Jerramy have to kiss before she finds her prince? Will she ever meet Peter Phillips and renounce her American citizenship for more palatial digs? This deliciously hilarious read will make you want to find out.
Armchair Interviews agrees.
