Secrets of the Hollywood Girls Club is the sequel to Maggie Marr’s first book, Hollywood Girls Club. It apparently continues on with characters that she developed in the first book. Unfortunately, I haven’t read the first book and found that there was a lack of character development in this book. It seemed as if I, the reader, should somehow know the women that the book revolves around.

There is the actress, Celeste (Cici); the writer, Mary Anne; the producer, Jessica; the company president, Lydia; the publicist, Kiki; plus numerous spouses, boyfriends, assistants and other hangers-on. Their lives are consumed with the mostly trivial issues of getting a film into production and hoping for Oscar nominations. Then they find out that an old bit of porno footage that should have been destroyed is being passed around – threatening the actress’s career, the producer’s film and the professional integrity of everyone connected with Worldwide Films. The plot then takes on a bit of mystery/thriller quality as the women try to discover who is out to defame them and why.

The book also contains several sexual escapades that weren’t as steamy and sexy as they were gratuitous. Part of the failing there, I think, was my lack of connection with the characters – I had a hard time caring what happened to them. The scenes would have been just as effective without some of the graphic detail.

Despite some of my misgivings about this book, it is a light, fun, and quick read and fans of the first book will probably enjoy it.

Armchair Interviews says: Best if you read Hollywood Girls Club first so you know the characters.
