When I first acquired the book Putting Jesus in His Place: The Case for the Deity of Christ, I thought the title was a little presumptuous. How could anyone actually “put” Jesus in his place? The more I pondered this title, I realized that it is precisely the role of the modern skeptic of Christianity. They are, in effect, trying to topple him from his proper place.
The authors give us a fantastic development of the deity of Jesus and do it in a way that allows a proper mnemonic to share this information with others. Bowman and Komoszewski’s emphasis is easy to follow: weave a text that develops the New Testament evidence for the divinity of Christ. Using the acronym HANDS, they explore how Jesus “shares the HANDS of God.”
H – represents the honors which Jesus receives in his life – honors reserved for God.
A – extols the attributes ascribed to Jesus – characteristics also spoken of God.
N – details the names given to Jesus – names that are reserved for deity in religious thinking.
D – develops the deeds which Jesus performed – deeds that exemplify the works of God.
S – proves that Jesus shares the same “seat,” which God occupies [his throne].
Who needs this book? Anyone in your life who will benefit from understanding the deity of Christ and its centrality to the Christian faith. As I looked over its contents, I wished it would have been available when I was a Bible college student – when I first grappled with the implications of Christ’s deity.
Perhaps you would like to be more equipped to share “why” you believe that Jesus is actually deity? This book is filled with charts and ample notes that would complement any apologist’s library.
To deny Jesus’ divinity would be to deny Scripture. This book is a gold standard to understand “who” Jesus actually is – and keep him in his proper place in the minds of all Christians.
Armchair Interviews says: A subject that’s difficult to understand is presented in a straightforward fashion making it an excellent resource for a small group study.
