I admit it; I am not ashamed. I truly am a bibliophile. I love books. But it's hard to keep on top of what's being released without making a weekly trip to my local indie bookstore (six part-time jobs and a tight budget don't help either).
However, for the past year or so I have been subscribing to Pages: The Magazine for People Who Love Books. And I wait for each new arrival, read it cover to cover, make a list of books I want to read, then slowly peruse it again until the next issue arrives.
Editor John Hogan and his staff do a remarkable job of covering all the genres as well as the usual 10 to 12 features. The Jan./Feb. 2006 featured couple Michael Chabon and Ayelet Waldman and how they deal with life as artists and Waldman's latest creative endeavor.
Another feature traced the potholes and support beams that authors whose parents are icons (like Bellow, Jong, Fast, Kellerman, Fugard). My absolute favorite feature this month was The Usual Suspects and James L. Swanson's new book on the Lincoln Assignation (I pre-ordered it and am now fighting with a good friend about who gets to read it first).
The publishing companies (I presume) take out ads to hawk their new releases--big ads, too. And not just on the hottest authors, but the newbies too!
I eagerly anticipate several departments: New Releases: Books to Look For (includes a listing of the five highest initial printings,),Our Favorite Places (a bookstore or library of course!,),New Releases; and Promising Debuts.
Armchair Interviews: If you agree...so many books, so little time! this is a magazine is good solution--and can be subscribed through Amazon and our link.
