There is nothing primitive about Mario Sanchez’ folk art. It is dynamic. It is delicious. It is simply stunning!

The works of Mario Sanchez chronicles the artist’s personal recollections of life in the Key West of a bygone era. His works are carved in wood and painted in vivid color. Each piece tells a story, a true story, from his past.

Nance Frank and Brewster Chamberlin have compiled a book that details the stories behind the artist’s work. Each story is accompanied by a photograph that certainly adds to the flavor of the piece.

I love the look of Sanchez’ work. I love the flavor, the feel, the color and the rich stories. He’s simply amazing and the authors give you the feel of the place, the story and the artist in their book, Mario Sanchez: Once Upon A Way of Life.

It’s tough to pick out a favorite piece. The street scenes are so plentiful and rich that I could say any one of them could be my favorite. But then, I see another and think maybe that’s my favorite. But if forced to choose, it would be “Old Island Days-Fresh Spanish Limes” and “Funeral No. 55.” Frankly, they are my favorites today. Tomorrow I’ll fall in love with other pieces of his delicious art. That’s what is so exciting about Mario Sanchez. You fall in love with his art in many ways, on different days, for varied reasons. His work touches my soul.
