Once in awhile I stop moving at the speed of sound and look around me to see what the world is doing. Often I’m appalled, but once in awhile there’s a kernel of hope out there. I found one recently in the form of a small cookbook conceived and authored by a young girl living in Arizona.

It seems Jessica loves to cook (a passion passed on to her from her grandmother). It also appears that Jessica is not more than 10 (she’s not divulging this information) and she’s already won blue ribbons for her cooking at the Arizona State Fair. Now that’s something special!

But that’s not all, Jessica cares about other people and thus her cookbook was born. And ALL of the proceeds go to the Arizona Science Center Kids Committee. That means that kids who can’t afford to buy tickets to see the exhibits can, with Jessica’s help. Oh would that we would have more Jessicas and fewer Lindsays and Britneys.

The small book is delightful. She provides a page (written in her own hand) of cooking tips and eight of her prize-winning recipes. Now $10 for eight recipes might seem like a lot, but these are prize-winning recipes and they’re scrumptious–and they help kids. She first wrote it and sold to family and friends–and then others started asking for it.

We get a recipe for yummy caramels, delicious chocolate chip cookies (my favorite), toffee coffee cake that will make you ask for more, scrumptious chocolate crunch brownies, the best ever blackberry jam, mouth-watering apple bread, great banana nut muffins and the all time favorite snickerdoodle cookies. Are you drooling yet?
