At last! A real book, about real young women, who love God and are struggling to ‘do the right thing.’ They may not always be successful at ‘doing the right thing,’ but the author does not shy away from natural consequences. Wow! What a novel thought. Sadly, it is becoming a foreign concept in our society.
Lissa (not Melissa) Mansfield is tall, blond and beautiful. In Santa Barbara, where she used to live, she was the ‘popular’ girl. Now that she and her family have moved because her movie director father has a long-term job in the San Francisco area, Lissa attends Spencer Academy, a boarding school for the ridiculously rich. And she’s not embraced by the other students. In fact, the bane of Lissa’s existence appears in the form of one Vanessa Talbot.
Lissa’s new roommate is Gillian Chang, girl extraordinaire. Like Lissa, she is a Christian. Unlike Lissa, who is reluctant to share her faith openly with everyone, Gillian does. And she becomes Lissa’s not-so-quiet conscience.
When Gillian and Lissa start a Tuesday evening prayer group, they are joined by Carly and Vanessa’s crew, who are not serious about prayer, or anything else of faith. Vanessa’s motives are to ‘bring down Lissa.”
Lissa is attracted to hunky Callum McCloud and doesn’t want her faith to interfere with her love life. But she soon learns that her faith will be tested when she gets involved with Callum. There’s alcohol and pressure for sex. Life at Spencer Academy becomes quite complicated when your faith takes a vacation, you’re expected to produce Angelina (yes that Angelina) for a ‘big night’ at the Academy, the clique is working overtime to destroy you–and the guy of your dreams may not be the guy of your dreams.
Armchair Interviews says: A good read for ages 13-17.
