Hot Flash tells the story of Jill Morgan Storm who has just celebrated her fortieth birthday. When reflecting upon her life, she often only sees the negative aspects, which include a divorce, a recent breakup with a man she planned on marrying, and a financial situation that is far from secure.
After reading in the newspaper anniversary announcements of couples who have been together for many years, Jill creates a survey to send out to them asking what their secrets are for obtaining a lasting relationship. While some of the responses are touching and definitely come from the heart, others seem to have strange priorities for staying together. After analyzing the responses, Jill concludes the best type of relationship is one in which one person is away much of the time, so she sets out on a hilarious adventure to find a traveling salesman she can call her own.
Author Kathy Carmichael adeptly describes the feelings Jill is experiencing. Her disappointment when expectations are not met, in both her personal life and her professional life, are prominently displayed. The desperation she feels about not being able to pay her son’s college tuition is strong enough to make her settle for things instead of going after what she wants out of life. Jill’s growth as a woman and a mother is captured by her setting aside her pride and accepting help from others instead of being offended when people offer their opinions or try to give advice.
This book is aimed toward women. It is humorous and readers will be able to relate to some of the situations Jill experiences. The scenes in which she is preparing for her dates are priceless. Also, her outings with her three close friends will remind the reader to accept support when times are bleak.
The message in this story is to pursue whatever it is that you want and not to give up if the goal seems too hard to reach. Do not settle for less, but beware of overlooking something or someone who is right in front of you.
Armchair Interviews says: A very fun read.
