Most of us want to do what is best for ourselves and our families. We also realize that making more money does not necessarily provide what is best for us. Some of us believe that discovering our innate talents and making room for their expressions is what is best for us. This is the basic premise in High Way from Hell.
White attempts to provide readers with a method of providing expression to their varied emotions. The techniques she discusses are not new, and can be found in psychology, mysticism, Sufism, and other areas that attempt to understand the Self or connect an individual to Ultimate Reality. In the Eastern religions this is achieved primarily through meditation. In the traditional religions (e.g., Shamanism), an experiential component is added.
The mystical interpretations of the Western religions use varying levels of meditation and ritual to prepare the body and mind. In psychology acknowledging our feelings and providing a safe outlet for them is often used. White touches on all these methods, but does not delve deeply in any of them. The reader is encouraged to find his/her unique path – a touch of modern individualism!
The most difficult part of this exercise is to recognize when one has attained the state of calm. White tries to describe this state and provides personal examples of how she reached this state. Ultimately, how an individual reaches this state and recognizes that one has reached it is a personal experience, which according to some mystical traditions is a “deeply personal sensation that defies description.”
Some readers may feel that White’s examples are too drawn out, while others may feel that the “extended” examples help readers better understand White’s experiences. Some readers may find this book as being repetitive. Others may argue that repetition is necessary to grasp the profound ideas that White is trying to communicate. Yet others may want to read this book multiple times to fully comprehend the ideas presented in all their depth and complexities.
While one may not agree with White’s approach, one needs to acknowledge her attempt at communicate complex ideas in simple terms.
Armchair Interviews agrees.
