A man slowly brings a gun to his head. The camera abruptly switches to a funeral scene and we learn that Chris Hayden, loved by everyone who knew him, has died. A group of his friends have gathered together over a weekend to mourn his death, bury him and reconnect with each other.
But not all is as it seems. Tensions rise as each person’s darkest secrets are revealed to the others. Jeremy rediscovers his first and only love (she is Chris’ sister), as he and his current girlfriend stay with her. Another friend continues to fight a sexual secret that is bent on destroying him. Jeremy’s first love has never forgiven herself for a sin she committed in college, and a Christian author fights jealousy and his inability to have any positive impact on his very pregnant and very judgmental wife whose sharp tongue and disagreeable manner ignites the group in ways they couldn’t know were possible.
While all the friends are experiencing their individual catharsis, Gary, (John Schneider of Dukes of Hazzard and Smallville) who is an agnostic, begins his own journey of questioning everyone else’s faith and ends up dealing with his own. And the question of the gun is finally answered.
A great many problems are addressed in this film. Perhaps too many. Or maybe not, since we all have issues that we hide. I think some might find the film too ‘neat.’ There are issues and they are pretty much wrapped up at the end. That’s not always the real life goes. Others might find the film cheesy and that also may be a fair assessment. But hey, in this world we’re seeing every sin celebrated in film. Violence is glorified and much that is good is ‘put down.’ Give me a feel-good, cheesy film that shows us what God wants for us and I’ll choose that every time over much of what is out there in ‘mainstream’ movie theatres.
Armchair Interviews says: Not a great film, but worth watching.
