Heroine Kate Collier is the typical small-town girl whose adventures are limited to the books she reads. Her safe and orderly life changes abruptly with the news that her biochemist brother is missing. His last-known destination was the deepest part of the Amazon jungle. As his twin, Kate is convinced he is still alive, even though the government has failed to find any sight of him or his research team.
When the search is officially called off, she must leave her comfort zone to mount her own rescue. She isn't in the primitive Brazilian town of Mandras a day, when she realizes without the help of the ruggedly handsome American, A.C. Slader to guide her, she might not survive the village's uncivilized citizens or the assassins hired to keep her from finding her brother.
A.C. Slader lives at the edge of humanity for a reason. All he wants is to be left alone in his misery. However, the prim and proper American lady smells of roses, and manages to stir up haunting memories of a past he's trying to forget. Even her close relationship with God irritates him. Why should he risk his life and hers for a brother that is probably already dead?
The author has managed to capture the haunting mystery of the Amazon jungle as the backdrop for a spine-tingling and fast-paced adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat from page one. Her words will stimulate your imagination until you can feel the decaying foliage in every step and swelter in the intense tropical humidity, swiping at the insects, running from dangers, and may even feel a bit claustrophobic as the dense jungle presses in on your position.
I try and limit my fiction reviews to only the ones I can rave about. This one qualifies. I highly recommend Heart of the Amazon, filled with inspiration, romantic and suspense.
