Brian Cleeve lived an extraordinary life, as evidenced in this beautifully crafted memoir by Jim Bruce.

Bruce eloquently covers the many facets of Cleeve's life, from his birth on the east coast of England through two marriages, many adventures and to the end of his life. Each event in Cleeve's life, from the mundane to the incredible, such as Cleeve's brief jaunt into the world of espionage, is chronicled and told from the viewpoint of an outsider, though Bruce reveals that he had a friendship with Cleeve towards the latter part of Cleeve's life.

This work was obviously carefully researched, and it shows. Not only are the events of Cleeve's life explained as fully as possible, the author also shows what was happening in the world around Cleeve, from politics to global affairs, in order for the reader to gain a greater understanding of the motivations of the time.

I enjoyed this memoir immensely. It was well written and easy to follow. Because of Bruce's research and his storytelling skills, the reader feels as if they are experiencing everything along with Cleeve, a man who lived life to the fullest and wasn't afraid to stand up for what he believed.
