Henry Atherton’s family is on the cusp of divorce. His mother is having an affair with his father’s secretary. Pyrgus Malvae is a Faerie who happens to love kittens and has found himself in a spot of trouble. He’d been caught leaving Lord Hairstreak’s manor with his olden phoenix. To escape Hairstreak’s men, he hides in Chalkhill and Brimstone’s glue factory where his trouble deepens. Malvae’s life is further complicated by an evil demon who expects his very life to be delivered to him.
Malvae eventually finds himself in the human world for protection, and there he meets Henry when he is working for his summer employer (Mr. Fogarty). It seems Mr. Fogarty’s yard is a portal between the Faerie world and the human world. A friendship evolves between the three when they work to help Malvae return home.
The adventures involve romance, a grand friendship, great evil and excitement enough to keep your attention from the first to the last page. I enjoyed the story, became oh so fond of the rich, fully developed characters and wanted more by the time the book ended. And, since the book ends with the words to be continued…it appears that there will be other adventures to follow.
Armchair Interviews says: Faerie Wars will be enjoyed by both girls and boys as well as adults.
