Melanie Vargas is a Federal prosecutor, newly divorced and involved with FBI Agent, Dan O'Reilly. A romantic evening with Dan is put on hold when the body of a ruthless tabloid journalist (Suzanne Shepard) is found in New York's Central Park. Melanie and Dan find themselves working together to solve Suzanne's murder while they figure out their personal relationship.
Suzanne must have been meeting someone on the night of her murder. Perhaps it was a source. It could have been someone she knew. The only thing certain is that she would never have gone alone into Central Park at night.
Melanie takes a hard look at some of the people in Suzanne's life. It might have been the personal trainer who was providing his clients with more than fitness tips. Or it could be the political father of one of Melanie's best friends (Joe Williams). That little problem makes her friendship with Joe, a bit awkward of late. But the Park Avenue cosmetic surgeon has dark deep closets he'd love to keep secret from Suzanne and the world.
The investigation takes a sharp turn when Melanie begins to receive anonymous emails that become more and more threatening with each one. Melanie is going to die, like Suzanne, if she doesn't find the killer first.
Martinez' writes a sizzling, fast-paced suspense novel with enough romance to please those who want it, but not enough to turn off those who want straight suspense. This is her third novel and I'd like to read the others.
