Take one middle-aged breast cancer survivor (Tess Camillo), who happens to be a lesbian; a very pregnant friend (Beth), who is a bit ‘dramatic’; and throw into the mix murder, mayhem and hot lust with a lovely rabbi–and you’ve got a pretty hot race to solve a crime and maybe, just maybe, find love.
Beth and Tess spend the weekend at the Lightning Field, an earthworks art piece that has 400 lightning rods. Following a storm, Tess finds a body she first thought was the victim of lightning. But it’s obvious to the police that murder was the method of death. When the police find a Taser in Beth’s possession, she becomes the prime suspect. Tess is determined to clear her friend of murder, but a side trip into the arms of a ‘hot’ female rabbi, fills the hours not spent on clearing her friend’s name.
Blinded by the Light is a fun romp into murder. Tess is intriguing, fun, loyal and starved for a long-term relationship. Hunt writes humor well and does a nice job of moving along the plot and fleshing out the characters. Her descriptions are spot on and you feel like you can see what she sees. All in all it’s a fun, fast-paced read.
The only comment I have–and I’ve seen it far too often in my escape reading lately–is that Hunt peppers the novel with what feels like her personal political agenda. It’s distracting and is a take-away from the enjoyment of a fun read. I want my authors to write a good story, not sell me on political party, even if I happen to agree with them.
Armchair Interviews says: A fun book and a fantastic book (without the political statement).
