Becca Daniels is adventurous—to the point where she is willing to skydive. Her second trip down though, resulted in a broken leg when Becca landed wrong. Unable to commit, Becca has never had a relationship that lasted longer than a week, or a job that lasted longer than two years. So when her book club friends suggest she go back to the bookstore job Becca held down the longest, she is horrified…but, needing a job, she reapplies and is instantly hired.
Becca’s book club friends also dare Becca to date the same guy for three months. In return, they would do any three activities that Becca chooses. Becca thinks it’d be easy to date the same guy for three months, but she adds a clause, three months, or twenty-five dates, whichever comes first.
And then Ben comes into the bookstore. Ben is a Christian, and thus, “too churchy” and definitely not Becca’s type. But Becca is determined to win the bet, and Ben is determined to help her, so the two embark on a hilarious series of dates that plunge outspoken, purple-haired Becca into a sea of church potlucks and prayer meetings.
I have always enjoyed Laura Jensen Walker’s books, and I’ve loved both of the first two books in the Getaway Girls Novel series. Becca by the Book is the third in the series, and it easily stands alone.
I think I enjoyed Becca by the Book the most of this series so far, mainly because I enjoyed seeing all of Becca’s preconceived ideas of church and Christians busted in this humorous book. I especially loved the secondary character, Lucy, as she was real, fun, and totally loveable. I would like to have a friend like Lucy.
If you love books, and love totally real, quirky characters, then Becca by the Book is for you. “The Getaway Girls Guide to Christianese” is included at the end of the book. Written in first person, I was instantly able to relate to Becca and get to know her. I also enjoyed her snarkiness.
Armchair Interviews says: Don’t miss Becca by the Book.
