Ohhh, he's so cute!
That was my first reaction when I saw the cover photo of Baby Bear nose to nose with a skunk.
Author Marion Dane Bauer has written more than 50 books for young people, winning many awards, including the Newbery Honor. She teaches college courses in writing for children and young adults. Her words nicely complement the photos.
Stan Tekiela is a naturalist, author, newspaper columnist, radio personality and wildlife photographer. His ability to capture the various animals and Baby Bear's natural reaction tells the visual story.
This outstanding combination makes for a book that will touch both the children and "the child within" any adult.
Baby Bear decides he is big enough to investigate the world alone. All the animals he meets ask him "Where is your mama?"
The wonderful photos of "bears being bears" made me fondly remember the many times our family saw bears in Northern Minnesota, and how their behavior fascinated all of us.
In addition to the obvious story of the Baby Bear's curiosity, parents can use this message as a tool to talk with their young children about staying close to mom or dad when outside their home, that "independence" isn't always a good or safe thing.
Armchair Interviews says: Your kids will learn by watching "bears be bears" and the relationship between Baby Bear and his mama.
