Atonement is a novel that follows the story of two young lovers–Cecilia Tallis, an educated woman from a wealthy family and Robbie Turner, a son of a servant who was educated through the grace of Cecilia’s family. Just as their love is beginning to grow, tragedy, misunderstanding, and ill will tear them apart. Love and determination keep them in contact, even through the ravages of World War II. Guilt, family bonds, and the desire to make amends, drive the characters to find the proper means to correct the errors of the past.

It is a gripping story that takes a little while to get going, but once you are hooked, there is no putting it down. One of the major strengths of the story is you immediately empathize with all of the characters. From the simple trials of childhood, to the ache of lost love and family conflicts, the novel touches on emotions we have all felt.

It is obvious that a great deal of historical research went into this novel, and this added nice touches throughout the story, enhancing the characters and settings. From the cut of nurse’s uniforms to the pangs of a soldiers thirst, you felt when they were cold, hungry, tired, or just plain stressed out.

The only issue I have with the novel is that it seemed to be missing large chunks. There were whole sections of time that I would have loved to read about. But from a realists view, adding these parts would have made the book so long as to make it unreadable. The story is complete and easy to follow; it simply leaves you with a desire to know more.

Armchair Interviews says: A very touching and beautiful story that draws you in with immediate connections with the characters and historical details that create a vivid and intricate background.
