The Fruit of My Lipstick is the second book in the All About Us series that tells the story of three high school juniors (Carly Aragon, Lissa Mansfield, and Gillian Chang) who attend the elite Spencer Academy boarding school in San Francisco.

Whereas the first book focused mainly on Lissa’s story, Gillian is featured in this novel. Gillian is an Asian girl whose family lives in New York. Her older brothers have accomplished wonderful things, so Gillian feels she must constantly compete for attention. Her family believes academics should be the most important thing in her life, but Gillian longs to experience other things, such as having a boyfriend and falling in love. When a scandal involving the theft of exam questions breaks out, accusations fly, resulting in many of Gillian’s relationships being put to the test.

Teenage girls will thoroughly enjoy reading this book. They will be able to relate to the pressures of high school, including fitting in and searching for a boyfriend. The author does an excellent job of demonstrating the importance of having a relationship with God, without sounding preachy. She also imparts another important message to young readers. They need to keep their eyes open in a relationship so as not be blinded by what they may mistakenly think is love.

I enjoyed seeing Gillian mature throughout the book. When she finally realizes she can get her points across without always having to be the center of attention, I wanted to cheer. It was also great when she learned to stay true to herself, instead of trying to change who she is in order to please others.

The Fruit of My Lipstick contains all of the elements high school girls will enjoy–from friendships to first kisses to even the occasional cat fight. It is a fun book that also provides the opportunity for the reader to explore her religious beliefs.

I am eagerly anticipating seeing what adventures their senior year will bring.

Armchair Interviews agrees.
