Shelby is a shark--a shy shark. Shelby is so shy she misses out having fun playing with all the fish and other ocean creatures where she lives.

The author wrote Shelby for children to understand about being brave and making new friends. "Even now, every one in a while, I have a Shelby moment," Nyikos says. (Don't we all!)

Told in rhyme, it has words (and names of exotic fish) that will delight children as they hear how shy Shelby finds the needed courage to help rescue her fish friends.

The illustrations by Shawn Sisneros are bold lines and colors that will delight children.

"Then for the very first time in her shy lonesome life...," may be just the line that children can relate to.

This book ends with "Shark Bites," a very informative section that answers nine questions about the shark and specifically the lemon shark.

Armchair Interview says: This is a book for all children, but specifically those who are interested in fishes, the ocean and sharks.
