The Coach’s Son is the story of how the Mark O’Bern, 8-year-old son (and other family members) are all affected by the ups and downs of the life of Chester O’Bern, a 1960’s professional coach: the loving and hating fans, the joys and pains of winning and losing-and the moves to new town, new jobs. Mark and two older brothers spend a lot of time with their overprotective mother as Dad is always gone. As author Hickey says: Most professional athletes end their career when they are losing. Young O’Bern believes he can influence the outcome of games, and we get to enjoy his efforts and his humor used to deal with life of A Coach’s Son. Diane Raab, author of Regina’s Closet: Finding My Grandmother’s Secret Journal

Diana Raab has captured the essence of her grandmother Regina’s life—as Regina told it in retrospect after she arrived in America. Regina and her family lived in Poland when WWI broke out. The Reinharz family was parents, two older brothers, Regina and younger sister Beronia. The grandmother’s journal was found by Diana’s mother and given to her in the 1990s.

Diana was shocked to read what her dear grandmother had gone through as a child of war. Mother died, brothers left, separated from their sick father, Beronia and Regina were left to fend for themselves as adolescents. A powerful and driven young girl, Regina knew if they were going to survive, she would have to make it happen. Although a story about war, the story has such power of survival, of second effort at every turn. In addition to the journal, Raab intersperses some geography and history to give us more perspective. WW1 started in 1914, lasted four years, and 9 million lives were lost. Most war stories are not told from a child’s point of view—but don’t let that scare you off. THIS IS A PAGE-TURNER!

Additionally, Diana Raab teaches others how to write their own memoir, and believes everyone “has a story to tell,” if just encouraged.

Interview with Tad Waddington, author of Lasting Contribution

Tad Waddington wrote this book to provide general guidelines and ideas of what you need to do to make this world a better place for others. The framework is from Aristotle’s Four Causes that he has updated to 1) material cause of what a thing is made, 2) How something is made, 3) What a thing is called the plan, and 4) Why a thing is. Based on both Eastern and Western thinking, the big questions are: How can I contribute to the world? How do I make that contribution last? Am I making the best contribution to the purpose of this community/church/business/activity, etc.? This easy-read book is for everyone, because everyone can make some contribution to this world. Waddington’s thought-provoking ideas include: Doers think before acting; thinkers take action, and this equals remarkable results. Ideal for anyone questioning your role on this earth.

Tara Taylor Quinn, author of Behind Closed Doors

Listen as Tara Taylor Quinn discusses her newest book Behind Closed Doors, the second in a trilogy about white supremacy. The first book (still available) is In Plain Sight and is told from the perspective of an attorney. Behind Closed Doors is from the victim’s perspective, and in the third one, due out in 2008, the issue is presented from a judge’s perspective. Behind Closed Doors is a powerful and compelling novel of the insidious nature of terror delivered by white supremacists who fuel their hatred with violence and more hatred. A mixed-race couple falls victims to their violence and almost loses everything, but chooses to fight back and seek justice.

Tara Taylor Quinn tells how she got the idea for this trilogy. It’s a fascinating story, and we know you’ll be mesmerized by it. She is the author of over forty novels.

Paul Elwork, author of The Tea House

Elwork, a first-time author, spins a wonderful tale of coming of age of 13-year-old twins. His story is based loosely on a true story of two women in the 19th century who could make noises with their bones (ghost-knocking)–who traveled the country as “curiosities.” Ghosts that Emily, the girl twin, may or may not see and talk to–and those annoying “skeltons” in the family’s closet make for wonderful reading. Dead father, depressed mother, self-sufficient “privileged” kids–Elwork is a good storyteller with attention to detail and characters that you actually care about, especially their secrets–that they will stay in your mind long after the last page. Listen while Paul tells about his ghost-knocking inspiration, and all about his writing life.

Stacy Nyikos, author of Dizzy

Stacy Nyikos’ third children’s book with an aquatic theme is Dizzy, about a dolphin that doesn’t slow down, hasn’t learned the importance of quiet time like some of his other ocean friends have. Illustrations by Kary Lee are filled with energy, delight and surprises, and unique designs to involve the reader.

Nyikos starts with inspiration from her children and finds an aquatic animal to tell the story. Her first book, Squirt, was about a squid that had become a couch potato, watching too much TV. Her Shelby was about a lemon shark that was shy. Now Dizzy is a perfect third book also written in rhyme. Tim Dorsey Armchair Interview

Join Andrea Sisco as she talks with author Tim Dorsey about writing and his latest novel, Hurricane Punch. Dorsey has written nine novels and his tenth is coming out in early 2008.

Hurricane season is about to pound the life out of Florida. It seems a serial killer, or maybe two, is on the loose and if he or they are not caught soon, the body count will continue to rise.

Dorsey’s loveable (ouch!) psychopath, Serge loves killing people, he just wants to kill those that truly deserve it. I guess that means he has some kind of moral compass. Serge has a short attention span, but is a walking/talking encyclopedia on all things Florida. And he loves chasing hurricanes.

But Serge is not responsible for the murders a certain newspaper is accusing him of committing and so he does what any self respecting murderer would do if wrongly accused; he and the serial killer send dueling letters to the editor.

Is Serge the killer? Is he so far gone he doesn’t realize that he’s been on the loose randomly killing folks? Is Agent Mahoney (recently released from a mental hospital for getting too far into Serge’s head) going to get to stay out of the hospital? Or will his personality finally split from years of chasing Serge. Then there’s Coleman, Serge’s forever ‘high’ friend who just wants to stay out of jail and out of work.

Dorsey is brilliant! His edgy humor leaves nothing in society untouched by his quirky view of life. His novels are entertaining, raucous, pack a punch and leave the reader wanting more of his offbeat humor.

She is unhappy with her life and marriage, which leads to an affair with a British-educated local archeologist. Paul Robertson’s The Heir is a book about greed, murder and mayhem—and about hope and redemption—and the path it took young Jason Boyer to get there. Published by Bethany House, a Christian publisher, The Heir is based on the Bible story of the rich man who wanted to follow Jesus, and Jesus asking him to give up all his money. The now-deceased (murdered?) power broker’s life had many turns, often questionable. What does the next generation who inherits it all do about that—and how to they handle the power and position—and the “Why” of life? Laurel Dewey Armchair Interview

Laurel Dewey’s PROTECTOR, is a thriller where the human interconnectedness outplays the “thriller” aspect. This amazing first novel pits Det. Jane Perry, a smart-mouthed, loose cannon alcoholic with a little girl who needs protection because she witnessed her parents’ murder. Det. Perry has visions of the future—and the “blue sense” (cop’s version of sixth sense/intuition/gut reaction) plays big. Perry and the little girl have a lot of shared history—and intense scenes fill many a page. Those who have already read the book can’t wait for the sequel because they just can’t let go of the characters. (See our review by Jake Chism.) Judy’s debut novel, And Baby Makes Two is a fun romp into the world of a 37 year-old woman whose biological clock is ticking ever faster. Love comes packaged in the form of a child from China, then it comes knocking in the form of a man. What happens next becomes a rollicking ride into a New Yorkers desire to be a parent.

Author of Fever

Fever is daring, it’s gritty and it will make you long for the next installment from this talented writer.
